House
(Chapter 1)
Lockie and his family moved from Perth to a new town. The author described the town small and “crummy looking”. Perhaps because the town they used to live in looked better. When Lockie went to his room his first reaction was that it smelt like a dead German Shepard.
(Chapter 2)
Lockie was in his room when Mrs Leonard came in nervous with a book in her hand. Mrs Leonard didn’t want Lockie to be at a disadvantage so she gave him a book about sex. Lockie felt uncomfortable and awkward.
School
(Chapter 1)
Lockie, Mrs Leonard and Phillip walked to Angelus High. Lockie was going to enrol into the school even though the term hadn’t started. The school wasn’t anywhere near as ugly as the schools in the city. The school looked old, like it was going to fall down.
Beach
(Chapter 1)
After work, Lockie’s dad drove him to the beach for a surf. The south coast of the town had good beaches. There were other boys there who thought Lockie couldn’t surf because he was a city boy, but Lockie proved them wrong.

Chapter 1 Truly Packin’ Death & Chapter 2 It’s Time We Thought About *** & Chapter 3 Everybody’s Favorite Spread & Chapter 4 Another Big First & Chapter 5 Invisible Man & Chapter 6 Church & Chapter 7 True Torpedoism & Chapter 8 Trouble-Free Zone
This is a snap shot of what we have been thinking about when reading this story.
Right now I am feeling calm and relaxed when they are describing the scenery but when he describes his room which smells like a “German Shepherd that has died” I kind of found that funny.
Not exactly on sure on how I feel right now but I’m guessing that Lockie is feeling all funny because now he has to deal with new people. From the looks of it, it seems as though he is not a fan of it and since he is growing his habits are changing and so is his behavior.
I also think that he is feeling a little helpless because he’s suddenly in love with a girl (Vicki Streeton) who he has only met for 2 weeks and she said that she is feeling the
same.
As Lockie then was going into the school he got harassed and hazed by older kids who were meanies and he felt lonely and unwanted. The bullies also spread Vegemite on his private bits and he felt annoyed and lonely because there weren’t any friends to support him and comfort him.
We think that they did that to check out what his reaction would be and what he would do and what he would also do to handle the situation.
Chapter 4 Another Big First
Lockie feels as though that he is too young to be experiencing these types of events that are occurring in his life at the moment. He also pees his pants and is embarrassed and is not sure why that had happened. He is mortified because he was not expecting it.
Chapter 5 Invisible Man
Lockie feels as that he is different from what he was before he moved into the town. He is also more into and attracted to girls than ever before including the more mushy stuff. He also wants to learn more about girls as he is becoming more interested in girls.
Chapter 6 Church
On Sunday morning, Lockie’s family went to church but Lockie hates it because he doesn’t believe in it. At church Lockie felt bored which is why he started to think about Vicki Streeton and also wrote a poem about her appearance and her iced buns (her breasts).
Chapter 7 True Torpedoism
Borax his teacher gives Lockie detention because he talked back to him. It had all started when Lockie had tried to make a lap joint during woodwork class but then he couldn’t do it so borax insulted him. Lockie then insults him back and that’s when the teacher lifts him up by his collar and throws him at the door. The door was closed so Lockie ended up with a bruise on his forehead.
Chapter 8 Trouble-Free Zone
On Lockie’s 13th birthday he gets a yellow and green wetsuit to suit the colors of the Australian teams. He felt proud to be able to wear those colors. Lockie goes surfing and almost drowns and Vicki Streeton saves him. She also smooches him and they have a private and awkward moment. Lockie ends up running all the way home.
Esin: I also don’t think that book has had an impact on my life just yet, but I won’t judge a book by it’s cover!
Aynur: I think that this book hasn’t really done anything to change the way I feel about life, so far.
Both of us: This book is something that we never thought that we would read. We both have to admit although that there were some words that we wish to never ever read again, although it did enhance our vocabulary!
